Chris Squire, Yes Bassist and Co-Founder, Dead at 67

Chris Squire, Yes Bassist and Co-Founder, Dead at 67

Chris Squire, the co-founder and longtime bassist of prog rock icons Yes and the only member of the group to feature on every studio album, has passed away just over a month after revealing that he was suffering from a rare form of leukemia. Squire was 67. Current Yes keyboardist Geoff Downes first tweeted the news, “Utterly devastated beyond words to have to report the sad news of the passing of my dear friend, bandmate and inspiration Chris Squire.” Chris Squire, Yes Bassist and Co-Founder, Dead at 67.

Yes confirmed Squire’s death on their official Facebook page. “It’s with the heaviest of hearts and unbearable sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our dear friend and Yes co-founder, Chris Squire. Chris peacefully passed away last night in Phoenix Arizona, in the arms of his loving wife Scotty,” the band wrote in a statement.
“For the entirety of Yes’ existence, Chris was the band’s linchpin and, in so many ways, the glue that held it together over all these years. Because of his phenomenal bass-playing prowess, Chris influenced countless bassists around the world, including many of today’s well-known artists. Chris was also a fantastic songwriter, having written and co-written much of Yes’ most endearing music, as well as his solo album, Fish Out of Water.”
Yes formed in 1968 after singer Jon Anderson met self-taught bassist Squire at a London music-industry bar; the pair were soon joined by guitarist Peter Banks, keyboardist Tony Kaye, and drummer Bill Bruford. Yes released their self-titled debut in 1969. However, it wasn’t until Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman replaced Banks and Kaye, respectively, that the prog rock group really hit it big with 1971’s The Yes Album and Fragile.
Over the ensuing decades, Yes would see a parade of band members depart, enter and reenter, but Squire was the lone constant in the shape-shifting band, serving as their bassist for nearly 50 years. Squire is also credited as a co-writer on many of Yes’ greatest cuts, including “I’ve Seen All Good People,” “Starship Trooper,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” “Yours Is No Disgrace” and “Heart of the Sunrise.”
In addition to his work with Yes, Squire was involved in other side and solo projects. His 1975 solo LP Fish Out of Water is revered among prog fans. Squire also teamed with Yes part-time guitarist Billy Sherwood for their Conspiracy project in 2000 and, more recently, formed Squackett with Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett. Yes’ current incarnation featured singer Jon Davison, and as Squire told Rolling Stone, the vocalist was hired based on a recommendation from Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins.
In May, Squire revealed that he was recently diagnosed with acute erythroid leukemia, which would force him to miss the band’s summer co-headlining tour with Toto. The absence marked the first time in the band’s history that Yes performed without their longtime bassist.
“This will be the first time since the band formed in 1968 that Yes will have performed live without me,” Squiresaid in a statement. “But the other guys and myself have agreed that Billy Sherwood will do an excellent job of covering my parts and the show as a whole will deliver the same Yes experience that our fans have come to expect over the years.”
In February 2013, Rolling Stone spoke to Squire about Yes’ legacy and the fact that Rush, but not Yes, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Logistically, it’s probably difficult for whoever the committee is to bring in Yes,” Squire said. “Rush is fairly simple. It’s the same three guys and always has been. They deserve to be there, no doubt about that. But there still seems to be a certain bias towards early-Seventies prog rock bands like Yes and King Crimson… In our case, we’re on our 18th member. If we ever do get inducted, it would be only fair to have all the members, old and new. So that may be a problem for the committee. I don’t know.”

The 10 Best Songs of 2015 (So Far)

Best Songs of 2015

From Justin Bieber’s EDM crossover to Florence + The Machine’s stunning new single, these 10 songs have ruled the first half of the year.
The standout tracks of 2015’s first half have a positive air about them, whether it’s Kacey Musgraves advising us on how life can be gravy, Young Thug knowing that good times are coming or Tame Impala letting the world unfold as it may. And when the songs themselves aren’t too sunny, their backstories still feel heartwarming —Justin Bieber’s big radio comeback, for instance, or Florence Welch’s ascent to pop genius status. There’s a feel-good story somewhere in all of these 10 songs, which will all sound great throughout 2015 and beyond.
Check out our unranked list of the 10 best songs of 2015 (so far):

A hearty “Hey, what’s up, hello” to one of rap’s most uniquely inspired new personalities: Fetty Wap’s surprise success story has been all the more enjoyable to witness due to the jubilant debut single on which it is founded. “Trap Queen” is teeming with enough hooks and good vibes to have rightfully taken over 2015’s first half.
Does it sound a whole lot like “Follow Your Arrow”? Sure. Does it not matter? Nope, not at all. Kacey Musgraves is sticking to her strengths on “Biscuits,” offering more gooey life lessons but never sounding patronizing in the process. One of country music’s most critically beloved stars continues to impress.
This is the Justin Bieber we’ve been waiting for: emotive, vulnerable and smart enough to join forces with two of electronic music’s most reliable maestros. The combination of Bieber’s moving falsetto and Skrillex and Diplo’s tangled knot of beats makes “Where Are Ü Now” a deserved (and much-needed) triumph.
U.K. alt-pop trio Years & Years has yet to find a radio foothold in the States, but “King” sounds like it’s destined to be played at arenas for years to come. When frontman Olly Alexander extends his arms and cries “Let go, let go, let go of everything” at the end of the single, it’s almost impossible not to indulge in some type of uninhibited dance breakdown.
It’s the end of June, and we’re still waiting for the new Rihanna and Kanye West albums… as well as some indication that either will be coming soon. To tide us over, however, the pair of music superstars linked up with a legend and recorded a durable, folked-up soul sing-along. Ye and Rih always zag when we expect them to zig, and we’re forever grateful for it.
Young Thug has released a ton of music on his own accord in 2015 (and has a proper debut album coming in August), but his guest spot on Jamie xx’s magnificent new album became his unlikely crowning achievement this spring. On “(I Know There’s Gonna Be) Good Times,” the gonzo rapper’s unchecked energy proves to be the perfect foil for the xx auteur’s warm production.
“Let It Happen” is nearly eight minutes in length, but Tame Impala’s epic single is more of a roller coaster than a sprawling freakout, and as such, never loses its momentum. The different movements of the song swirl around Kevin Parker’s lyrics about embracing the chaos of life, and the taut guitar line is all about compelling the listener to embrace the art of head-banging.
Abel Tesfaye has been transitioning from shadowy mixtape artist to mainstream R&B dynamo for a while now, and “Can’t Feel My Face” sounds like the logical conclusion in his quest for genre dominance. The Michael Jackson comparisons have been (deservedly) rampant, but the Weeknd’s brand of zonked-out thrill-seeking is all his own.
Florence Welch may have reached a new peak with third album How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful — she’s certainly never been more effective as a live performer, and “Ship To Wreck” demonstrates that she’s still growing as a pop songwriter. Everything comes together for Florence + The Machine on their latest single, as Welch’s voice coils around the slender arrangement and squeezes hard on the chorus.
Chance The Rapper could have been a flashy major-label hip-hop star by now; instead, he’s writing songs about his grandmother with his friends, and is far more respected because of it. “Sunday Candy,” the highlight of Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment’s gorgeous Surf album, doubles as 2015’s most unadulterated burst of happiness, as Chance leads the artist collective in a soaring tribute to the woman he looks up to the most.

Selena Gomez puts on a leggy display in a shiny rose-coloured dress with VERY high split at Hotel Transylvania 2 photo call

Selena Gomez puts on a leggy display in a shiny rose-coloured dress with VERY high split at Hotel Transylvania 2 photo call. Her body has been the focus of an uproar on social media as of late.
But there was no denying how good Selena Gomez looked on her latest outing. The 22-year-old actress put on a rather leggy display at the Hotel Transylvania 2 photo call in Cancun, Mexico on Sunday.
The Come & Get It Singer had her raven-coloured locks elegantly combed back as she sported natural, complimentary make-up on her face finished off with a swipe of red lip.
Selena certainly seemed to be the social butterfly at the event as she was spotted even chatting it up andsharing a few laughs with a few of the costumed characters at the event.Adam, 48, went casual as usual as he wore a baggy seafoam green T-shirt with athletic trousers and black Adidas sneakers.
Kevin, 50, also dressed comfortably for the occasion as he sported a plain black top, charcoal grey trousers, grey high-top basketball sneakers and a black cap.Fran Drescher who also utilized her vocal talents in the film was also in attendance as she rocked a black strapless mini dress.
The film is centred around a old fashioned vampire named Vlad who arrives at the hotel for an impromptu family get-together.
The animated movie also stars: Steve Buscemi, Keegan-Michael Key, Andy Samberg, David Spade, Mel Brooks, Chris Kattan and Julia Lea Wolov. Genndy Tartakovsky came back to direct Hotel Transylvania 2, which is set to hit theatres in September.

Game Of Thrones Season 5, Episode 10 Review: Mother’s Mercy

Game Of Thrones Season 5, Episode 10 Review: Mother’s Mercy.Spoilers through Season 5 of ‘Game of Thrones’ follow, as well as discussion of the books.
“My duty is to the realm. How many boys dwell in Westeros? How many girls? How many men, how many women? The darkness will devour them all, she says. The night that never ends. She talks of prophecies . . . a hero reborn in the sea, living dragons hatched from dead stone . . . she speaks of signs and swears they point to me. I never asked for this, no more than I asked to be king. Yet dare I disregard her? We do not choose our destinies. Yet we must . . . we must do our duty, no? Great or small, we must do our duty.”

Jon Snow is dead. Long live Jon Snow.
This was the same feeling I had at the end of the fifth book of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Jon Snow is dead, but really…he can’t be. Not entirely.
Because Jon Snow is the song of ice and fire. Some book thoughts/spoilers here, though it’s all theoretical now that the show and books are neck-and-neck, and viewers and readers are equals.

Jon Snow, I believe, is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, not of Ned Stark though Ned claimed him to protect him for all those years.
This makes Jon Dany’s nephew (though they’re about the same age, since she was so much younger than her eldest brother Rhaegar) and a slayer of White Walkers. He wields one of the last remaining Valyrian steel blades. Jon Snow is one of the chosen heroes of this saga. Azor Ahai, maybe.

I was prepared for Jon Snow’s death, or whatever it is. His death and possible resurrection. I have had years to dwell on it and stew over it and wonder. I was not prepared for Stannis to die.
I’m still not happy about it. Until last week, Stannis remained one of the more complicated, interesting characters in HBO’s fantasy drama. He was ruthless and utilitarian in his quest to become king, but he was never wicked in the same sense that Joffrey or Ramsay are wicked. His burning of Shireen was wicked, though, and foolish and out of character I think, still. It doomed him, but in the books his doom remains uncertain, as does his daughter’s fate. I’m not sure what to think now that we’ve come to the end of both books and TV show. The paths diverge, and yet here I am at the end of each. How strange.

Another gratifying, gory scene takes place in a Braavosi brothel, where the pedophile/sadist Meryn Trant is caning three young girls because, well, Trant is an awful human being and we really need another example of this I guess.
Fortunately it serves a bit more of a purpose than just that. The third girl doesn’t react at all to the beating. It’s Arya, naturally, though she’s wearing one of the magic faces from the Faceless Mens’ sanctuary.
She kills Trant with gusto, stabbing out both his eyes, slashing him wildly, stabbing him over and over in the chest, all while monologuing impressively. Then she cuts his throat, which is more than he deserved. Ah well, these “good” moments in Game of Thrones are so rare, let’s just enjoy them. Arya needed a kill, needed to whittle away at that long death list of hers.

In King’s Landing, Cersei confesses to her crimes—though not all of them.
For this, the High Sparrow, now the most powerful man in the capital city, allows Cersei to return to the castle and to her son, King Tommen. She just has to do a walk of atonement first, naked and barefoot from the High Sept to the Red Keep.
Her hair cut short, her robe discarded, Cersei walks. She walks to the taunts of a jeering crowd, to horrible insults and hurled food and filth. The Sparrows protect her as she shambles along, not breaking down, her feet bloodied.
